The sheikh mentioned in the chapter: Elements that assist one in obtaining knowledge

-I was informed by my diligent sheikh, Abdur Rahman As Sa'dee, it was mentioned about Al Kasaee, the Imam of nahoo (Arabic grammar) from Kufa (located in the area of Iraq), that he sought knowledge of nahoo, but he was not able to become grounded in it. One day, he noticed an ant climbing the wall with a piece of food. Every time it tried to climb, it would fall. But the ant was diligent until it overcame this difficulty and climbed the wall. Al Kasaee then said: This ant persevered until it reached its goal. He (Al Kasaee) therefore was persistent until he became a scholar in nahoo. (pg. 61 Av)

- Allah mentioned in the Quran:

While as for those who accept guidance, He increases their guidance, and bestows on them their piety (surah Muhameed:17)

The Sheikh commented saying:

So every time an individual acts upon his knowledge, Allah increases him in memory and understanding. This is due to His ( Allah's) general statement: He increases their guidance. (pg. 62 Av)

- It is upon a student of knowledge to seek assistance from Allah -Aza wa Jel-, then with the people of knowledge. He also does so by reading what they have written in their books. This is so, because merely sufficing oneself with reading and researching requires a great amount of time. Unlike one who sits with a scholar. One who clarifies, explains, and illuminates the road for him. I do not say that knowledge can only be obtained by sitting with the scholars. Verily one can obtain knowledge by way of reading and research, but the majority of the time, if one doesn't completely devote himself, day and night, and if he is not granted understanding, he can make many mistakes. It is because of this that it is said: Whoever seeks his knowledge from books, his mistakes are greater than he being correct. But in reality, this is not (always) general (pg.62 Av)

- Jealousy is to dislike what Allah has granted another individual. It is not (merely) desiring the removal of a blessing. In fact, simply disliking what Allah has granted someone else, this is jealousy. Whether you desire the removal of it or you merely dislike it, this is considered jealousy. (pg.71 Av)

- Verily, in (the characteristic of) jealousy, there is an imitation of the Jews. (pg.72 Av)

- Verily, jealousy negates the perfection of faith. This is due to the statement of the Messenger (sallahu alahe wa salum):

None of you truly believe, until he loves for his brother, that which he loves for himself.(Bukhari & Muslim)

The Sheikh continued to say:

What confirms with this (hadeeth), is that you dislike a blessing to be removed from your brother. If not, then you have not loved for him what you love for yourself, and this negates the perfection of faith. (pg.73 Av)

- Jealousy forces an individual to neglect asking Allah of His bounties. You find one who is jealous always concerned with the blessings of Allah upon others. Due to this, he doesn't ask Allah of His bounties. (pg.73 Av)

(We encourage the believers to refer to the English text for the many dangers of jealousy mentioned by the Sheikh)

- The Sheikh, while mentioning the dangers of speaking without knowledge said:

Do you not see that, if a person was to inquire about a road in a land, and you answered him incorrectly without knowledge, would people not consider this to be deception from you?! Likewise, how can one speak concerning the road to Jennah (paradise), which is the legislation that Allah revealed, without having knowledge?!(pg.76 Av)

- There are many examples to illustrate giving religious verdicts (fatwa) without knowledge. From these examples :

The verdict that a sick person, if his clothes become defiled and he is not able to clean them, he is informed that prayer is not obligatory upon him until he cleans his clothing. This verdict is a lie, a mistake and incorrect. The sick individual prays, even if his clothes contain defilements. In fact, even if impurities are on his body, and he is not able to clean them (he continues to perform prayer). Allah says in the Quran:

Fear Allah to the best of your ability (at Tagabun:16)

Further on the Sheikh said:

Because of this mistaken, incorrect verdict, some Muslims die without praying. If they only knew that the sick person prays in any state he may be in (according to ones ability), they would have died while still performing prayer. (pg. 79 Av)

- It is upon you (to concentrate) on the main books of the salaf. Verily they are better and more beneficial than many books of the later days. (pg.90 Av)

- If you contemplate over the majority of the opinions of Sheikh Ul Islam Ibn Taymiyah, you will find them to be correct. This affair is known by everyone who reflects over his works. (pg.90 Av)

- The book "Forty Hadeeth" authored by Abee Zakariay An Nawawee (rahimahullah), this is a good book. Reason being, in it are (narrations) on mannerism and good methodology. There are also present in it good principles. Such as the hadeeth:

From the good Islam of a person is him abandoning that which does not concern him. (Ahmed & At Tirmidhi)

This principle, if a person was to abide by it, it would be sufficient.

- The Kutub as Sitah ( six books): Sahih Al Bukhari, Muslim, An Nisaee, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah and At Tirmidhi. I advise the student of knowledge to constantly read these books. He will obtain two benefits by doing so:

Firstly: He refers to the main books.

Secondly: The repetition of the names in ones memory. When the names are constantly being repeated, he will not come across a narrator from the narrators of Bukhari in any chain of narrations, except that he will know that this is a narrator from Al Bukhari. So he obtains this benefit from the sciences of hadeeth. (pg. 94 Av)

- I (Sheikh Uthaymeen) always stress this point; Implementation! Whether in worship and character. Or in dealings. (It is upon you to) implement what you know, so that you are known as a student of knowledge who acts upon what he knows. (pg.112 Av)
