1 - QUESTION

Is it permissible for a woman to sway or rock back and forth in her prayer as she holds her baby in order to stop the baby from crying?

ANSWER by Shaykh Muhammad 'Umar Baazmool, instructor at Umm Al-Quraa University in Makkah

It is not permissible for a woman, nor for a man, to sway or make a lot of movements during prayer, because Allaah, Glorified and Exalted, has ordered us with khushoo' (submissiveness) throughout the prayer. And He has mentioned that the believers are those who pray with khushoo' [1].

Allaah, Glorified and Exalted, has also ordered us to be devoutly obedient in our prayers [2]:

( And stand (in prayer) devoutly to Allaah )

This includes being still and submissive, and not making movements other than the movements that are obligatory or recommended actions of the prayer itself.

It is also permissible to make minor movements in the prayer, movements that have a reason behind them, so long as they are not extensive or ongoing. This movement of a woman, her swaying back and forth with a child to keep it calm and relaxed, is decisively not from this kind of permissible minor movement.

2 - QUESTION

Is it permissible for a woman to step forward in her prayer a few steps to pick up a crying baby?

ANSWER by Shaykh Muhammad 'Umar Baazmool, instructor at Umm Al-Quraa University in Makkah

Yes, it is permissible for a woman, or a man for that matter, to move forward a few steps while praying so long as there exists a reason for that movement.

This is established in the Sunnah. It has been related that the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) used to pray in his house by himself. Then 'Aa'ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) came to the door, so he (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) stepped forward a few steps and opened the door for her, and then she entered.

It is also established that the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) prayed on the mimbar to teach the Companions the proper way to pray. So when he wanted to prostrate, he backed up and came down the three steps of the mimbar. Then he prostrated at the bottom of the mimbar, and then returned to his position (on the mimbar) so the Muslims could see his prayer. [1]

It is also authentically reported that he (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) used to pray while holding Umaamah. He used to place her down when he prostrated, and then pick her up again when he stood up. [2]

All this shows that there is no problem with slight movements within one's prayer, even if they are repetitive in each rak'ah. There is no problem with them, in shaa' Allaah.

3 - QUESTION

Is it permissible for a woman to repeatedly extend her hands in prayer to hold down a restless child? She has no assistance in the house and if she were to leave her child go, it may get hurt since no one is watching it.

ANSWER by Shaykh Muhammad 'Umar Baazmool, instructor at Umm Al-Quraa University in Makkah

Yes, it is permissible for a woman to grab a child with her hand so that it does not wander off while she is praying and then get hurt somehow, or do damage to something in the house.

The evidence for this is found in the narrations that we have mentioned [1], and specifically it is established that one of the Companions prayed while holding the bridle of his horse in his hand.

He prayed while holding the horse's bridle in his hand. When the horse would move, and he would also move with it, fearing that it would escape. [2]

So if this is permissible for a man to hold a horse's bridle, then it is permissible for a woman to hold down a young baby, and Allaah knows best.

The Prophet came out towards us, while carrying Umamah, the daughter of Abi Al-As (his grand-daughter) over his shoulder. He prayed, and when he wanted to bow, he put her down, and when he stood up, he lifted her up. -Sahih al Bukhari
