The Pots & Clothes of the Disbelievers
Shaykh Saalih al Fawzaan
"Do not drink in Gold or Silver vessels nor eat in similar bowls, for they belong to them (the disbelievers) in this world and to us in the Hereafter." {Al Bukhaaree 5633 (10/119), Muslim 5361 (7/261)}
Tidbit: Pots can be made of iron, wood, leather or the like.
It is permissible to use every pure pot except two types:
1. Pots made of Gold, Silver and the pots having anything related to Gold or Silver (such as being inlaid or plated with either one of them) or anything of the kind that connects the pots to them.
Tidbit: Pots inlaid with Gold or Silver for the sake of repair is an exception.
Anas ibn Maalik (radhiyallaahu 'anhu) said: "The cup of Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) broke and he fixed it with a Silver wire at the place of the crack." {Al Bukhaaree 3109 (6/255)}
"He who drinks in Silver vessels is only filling his abdomen with Hellfire." {Al Bukhaaree 5634 (10/119), Muslim 5353 (7/254)}
Tidbit: When something is legally prohibited to use, the prohibition is applicable whether this thing is use partially or totally.
Imaam An Nawawee (rahimahullaah) said: "Scholars uniformly agree that it is prohibited to eat or drink in such pots or even use them in purposes related to eating or drinking ." - {Al Majmoo' 1/306 & the Expounding of Imaam Muslim's Saheeh 7/255}
Tidbit: The prohibition of using or keeping Gold or Silver vessels applies to males and females. The addressee of the prohibition is general. There is nothing specified for a certain gender in this concern except for the permissibility of women to make use of both Silver and Gold for the purpose of adornment for their husbands.
Tidbit: It is permissible to use the utensils of the disbelievers unless one knows that they are impure. In this case, one can use them only after washing them.
2. The hides of dead animals: It is prohibited to use them unless they are tanned. Scholars differ regarding whether it is permissible to use them after tanning or not.
Tidbit: The sound opinion, which is maintained by the majority of scholars is that it is permissible to use them after tanning due to the many authentic ahaadeeth.
Tidbit: Their impurity is temporary, so it is removed by tanning.
The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said that the hides of dead animals "are purified by water and qarz (leaves of a kind of tree used for tanning)."
He (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) also said, "Tanning is the purifying means for hides." {Muslim 813 (2/279) & Ahmad 2521 (1/346)}
Shaykh Fawzaan (hafithahullaah) ended by saying: "As for the clothes of the disbelievers, it is permissible to wear them unless they are known to be impure. This is because the original ruling on their clothes is that they are pure and they can not be deemed impure by mere suspicion. Likewise, it is permissible to use whatever (clothing) is weaved or dyed by the disbelievers, for the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and his Companions (radhiyallaahu 'anhum) used to wear clothes weaved and dyed by disbelievers, an d Allaah the Exalted Knows Best.
